Poplar Bay

  • The eye-catching double pitched roof of this boat port is a local mariner’s landmark
  • Large valley saddles ensure that moisture finds its way off the roof and a functional cupola provides venting for the area below.
  • Distinctive double-curving timbers lend a lighter feel to the structure.
  • Steel posts and tie beams are wrapped with “trimber” cladding while the roof structure is solid, sawn timbers.

Montrose

  • Timber frame entries can serve multiple purposes.  They add curb appeal, provide a dry place for arriving guests, and in this case also offer a semi-private space to relax in an urban setting.
  • The simple use of light framing between the main posts, makes screening possible and a secure, bug-free space is achieved.

Kildonan

  • With such a beautiful door, distinctive glass sidelights and Tyndall stone arch, it was important that the new timber frame entry carry this look forward.
  • To provide more weather protection for the entry steps, the roof cantilevers a full 5’ beyond the posts, made possible by 10”x12” eave beams and two impressive 6”x10” braces that spring up from low on the posts.

St. Clements

  • Scandinavian design influences are seen in this double-posted entry’s eaves and rafter tails
  • In place of a truss, all three rafter sets are connected by collar ties that together provide the bracing to support the roof above.
  • The natural red undertone of the douglas fir is enhanced by the finish, emulating the look of mahogany.

Lux

  • A classic king post timber entry
  • The decorative end profile on the ridge and eaves is known as “crescent step” and adds a beautiful grace note to this simple design.

Wellman

  • Featuring two 18” diameter log columns supporting a king post truss with double curved ties.  This high entry carries the main roof line over the front deck
  • Two 8’x10’ flanking porches step back from the entry and extend the covered area the full 44’ width of the cottage.

Pembina Viewpiont

  • Being “in nature” is the essence of cottage life.  Having a beautiful outdoor space that allows one to take in the views, sounds and fresh air in comfort – that’s bliss.
  • This covered deck is an extension of the cottage living room, adding 450 sq. ft of gathering space.
  • For south facing cabins, the added cover significantly reduces summer heat, while still allowing winter sun to reach the interior.

Rose Lake

  • This visually striking entry has pairs of 8”x12” posts angled forward at 10 degrees.  This look is echoed by timber details at the garage.
  • Steel plates discreetly hidden at the peak and king post allow an otherwise “impossible” truss to defy gravity and achieve the look set by the designer.
  • A dark custom stain was formulated so the timber colour would compliment garage door and window trim finishes.  Custom stain matches are a Cornerstone specialty.

Fifth Avenue Bandshell

  • Green spaces are increasingly recognized as being vital to the well-being of a community.  When fully realized they create a sense of place and provide spaces for residents to meet each other in a relaxing, natural setting.
  • This 24’ wide hexagon with an eye-catching “hammer beam” third gable is the anchor for this community’s green space.
  • Stepping under the roof, one’s eyes are drawn upward to the central boss pin and the symmetry of radiating tie beams and rafters.
  • The space is a favourite of wedding photographers and is regularly used by local school ensembles and performers.

Away in the Woods

  • This delightful three season get-away is tucked into the trees a couple minutes walk from the client’s principal residence.  Woodland views on every side are complemented by a 12’x24’ deck that appears to float above the nearby creek.
  • At 24’ x 30’ the interior provides ample room for gathering with friends and family.  A galley kitchen with bar height island makes entertaining easy and a wood stove allows the space to be comfortably used from spring to late fall.
  • The timber structure achieves a welcoming, lodge-like feel in the fully open floorplan made possible by an impressive king post truss spanning the gazebo’s living area.
  • Eye-pleasing details are a Cornerstone hallmark.  In this design, a subtle curve added to the roof’s eaves may almost escape the notice of a first-time visitor.
