The Wellman timber frame entry is designed to create a strong architectural focal point while extending the sheltered outdoor living space of the cottage. Combining heavy timber craftsmanship with natural log elements, the structure introduces both visual presence and practical protection at the front of the home.

A defining feature of the design is the use of two massive 18 inch diameter log columns, which form the primary vertical supports of the entry frame. These natural log posts bring an organic character to the structure, reinforcing the rustic cottage aesthetic while providing the structural strength needed to support the overhead timber framing. Their scale immediately establishes the entry as a prominent architectural element and creates a welcoming transition between the surrounding landscape and the interior of the home.

Resting above the log columns is a king post timber truss, a classic configuration known for its structural efficiency and balanced geometry. In this design, the truss includes double curved tie beams, which introduce a graceful architectural profile while helping stabilize the roof structure. These curved ties soften the overall geometry of the frame and add visual movement to the entry structure, demonstrating the craftsmanship typical of traditional timber framing.

The height of the entry frame allows the structure to carry the main roofline outward over the front deck, creating a generous covered area that protects the entrance and outdoor seating space below. This elevated roofline not only provides weather protection but also enhances the sense of openness at the front of the cottage.

Extending from either side of the main entry are two flanking porches measuring 8 by 10 feet each. These secondary porch structures step back slightly from the main entry frame, creating a layered architectural composition that adds depth to the front façade of the building. By stepping the porches back from the central entry, the design maintains the visual prominence of the main timber truss while still expanding the usable outdoor area.

Together, the entry and the side porches extend the covered area across the full 44 foot width of the cottage. This wide sheltered zone provides multiple outdoor spaces where residents and guests can relax while remaining protected from sun and weather. The expanded coverage also helps visually connect the different portions of the front elevation into a cohesive architectural composition.

From a structural perspective, the combination of heavy log columns and engineered timber trusses allows the entry to span larger distances while maintaining an open and unobstructed space below. The exposed timber elements showcase the strength and durability of traditional timber frame construction while contributing to the natural aesthetic of the cottage setting.

Projects like the Wellman entry illustrate how timber frame structures can enhance both the architecture and functionality of residential cottages. By combining large scale log supports, elegant curved timber members, and extended porch coverage, the design creates a welcoming and durable entry space that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

The result is a timber framed cottage entry that balances rustic character with structural precision, providing both visual impact and comfortable outdoor living space across the entire front of the home.
