Located within a beautifully landscaped public park on Main Street in Steinbach, the KR Barkman gazebo is a striking example of how timber frame construction can enhance civic spaces while creating a welcoming venue for community events. Designed as both an architectural focal point and a functional gathering place, the gazebo regularly serves as a stage for community concerts, performances, and public gatherings throughout the year.

The structure is built as a hexagonal timber frame gazebo, a geometry that provides balanced structural load distribution while creating an inviting central space for audiences and performers. A defining architectural element of the design is the hammer beam third gable, which opens into the main pavilion area and creates a sense of height and openness within the structure. Hammer beam framing allows the roof to span wider distances while maintaining an unobstructed interior space, making it particularly well suited for public pavilions and performance areas.

The timber detailing throughout the structure reflects careful craftsmanship and attention to proportion. Surrounding the gazebo is a custom 36 inch high timber railing with solid newel posts, providing both safety and architectural definition around the perimeter of the pavilion. Matching timber railings continue along the concrete entry steps, creating a visual transition that connects the surrounding park pathways with the raised gazebo platform.

Above the structure, the roof system highlights the durability and beauty of traditional timber materials. The roof is finished with premium cedar shakes, a roofing material known for its natural resistance to weather and its ability to age gracefully over time. These cedar shakes complement the heavy timber structure while providing reliable protection from rain, snow, and sun exposure typical of Manitoba’s climate.

The roof edges are finished with large timber fascia boards, which give the structure a bold and well defined roofline. These fascia elements emphasize the craftsmanship of the timber frame while helping protect the roof assembly from weather exposure along the edges.

Inside the gazebo, visitors are greeted by a warm and inviting timber interior. Large curved timber braces extend from the supporting posts to the overhead beams, adding both structural reinforcement and visual elegance to the space. These curved braces soften the geometry of the frame and guide the eye upward toward the roof structure.

Looking overhead, the roof interior reveals exposed timber rafters paired with tongue and groove wood boards forming the ceiling surface. This approach allows the structural elements of the building to remain visible while creating a finished interior appearance that highlights the natural grain and texture of the wood. The result is a ceiling that feels both refined and authentically crafted.

The entire timber frame has been protected with Sansin SDF stain in the Autumn Gold colour, a finish that enhances the natural tones of the wood while providing long term protection against moisture, ultraviolet exposure, and seasonal weather conditions. The warm finish complements the surrounding landscape and helps the gazebo stand out as a landmark within the park.

Projects such as the KR Barkman gazebo demonstrate how timber frame pavilions can serve as both architectural features and functional community spaces. By combining durable materials, expressive timber detailing, and thoughtful design, the structure creates a venue where residents can gather for concerts, celebrations, and everyday enjoyment within the heart of Steinbach’s public green space.
